“Allah promises only to protect Quran and not Sunnah.”

This is the most repeated argument of Inkara-hadith (Hadith rejectors). Lets analysze their argument.

Allah says in quran “Indeed, it is We who sent down the dhikr and indeed, We will be its guardian.”

But i want to clear that the word “dhikr” and its derivative has numerous meanings in the Quran. Yes i agree it used for the Quran for eg

” And this is a blessed (dhikr) Reminder  which We have sent down, will you then (dare to) deny it? (Surah 21 ayat 50)

But it some time also used for sunnah and for other purposes for eg   Allah says
” We revealed to you the (dhikr) reminder that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them (ie Quran). (Surah 16; ayat 44)..”

Allah says

O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu‘ah [Friday], then proceed to the (dhikr) remembrance  of Allah ( Surah 62 ayat 9)”.

The first ayat is used for sunnah and the second one is used for other purpose. So it is clear now that Allah promises not only to protect quran but also sunnah of prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). The text of the quran will not be protected if its understanding which is sunnah is not protected. Furthermore,if anyone wants to restrict the meaning of “Dhikr” to the Quran then they need to present a sound proof.

  1. jazak allahu qhairan wa ahsan aljaza…

  2. U want to say that there are no invalid or fake hadiths?

    • Look sister. No, there’s a lot of fake Ahadeeth, but Allah has protected them, by giving the world a professional Biographical evaluation scientists, to know what the correct ones are and what the invalid ones are !!!

  3. Who inspire those great men like Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Maga, Al- Nawawee, Kutada and …….atc, to gather Al-Ahadeeth Al-Nabaweya of prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him)?

  4. It is incorrect to equate the Sunnah with Hadees. Sunnah is not Hadees.

Secondly, the proof that in that verse (15:9) the meaning of Dhikr is restricted to the Qurán is the context of that verse. Verses 1-8 are talking about the Quran and not the hadees.

    1. Alif Lam Ra. These are the Ayats of Revelation — of a Qur’án that makes things clear.

    2. Again and again will those who disbelieve wish that they had bowed (to Allah’s Will) in Islam.

    3. Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) Hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them).

    4. Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand.

    5. Neither can a people anticipate its Term, nor delay it.

    6. They say: “O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! Truly thou art mad (or possessed)!

    7. “Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?”

    8. We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have!

verse 1 and verse 6 conclusively prove that the Dhikr in verse 9 is none other than the Qurán.

  5. Tafsir Tabari

    يقول تعالـى ذكره: { إنَّا نَـحْنُ نَزَّلْنا الذّكْرَ } وهو القرآن

ndeed, We will be its guardian (and it is the Quran)

    Tafsir Qurtubi

    قوله تعالى: { إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ } يعني القرآن

    meaning the Quran

  6. But ahadeeth are not free from human intervention like Quran…

  7. Yes indeed there are hadeeth that are weak(dhaeef) or fabricated(maudhoo) etc but as sister pointed out there is a science of hadith.
    Here’s a lecture which might be informative insha’Allah :
A Brief History of Hadith Collection and Criticism

  8. As Quran is not the Only Guidance that has been revealed by God, as Dr. Asif has pointed out here https://rationalthinkerscafe.wordpress.com/2012/06/23/is-the-quran-only-quidance-that-has-been-revealed-by-god/ even to preserve Quran, not just in words, but in its actual meaning, the hadith had to be preserved, because it is in the life and sayings of the prophet we see the actual practical examples of the implementation of the Quranic teachings.

    • The problem here is that the verse that he is using to prove that God will preserve the hadith, is only about the Qurán. The correct stand is that by preserving the Qurán even the hadith has been preserved because whatever hadith will contradict the Qurán will not be accepted. So yeah, the hadith has been preserved but not as you are saying. The hadith have to be scrutinized not only by isnaad (chain of narrators) but also by Matan (text). This principle has been applied by Aisha (ra) herself in the hadith where she was asked whether the Prophet saw Allah during Miraj or not. Bukhari, Book 60, hadith 378. She simply rejected that notion by quoting the Quran ‘No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision. He is the Most Courteous Well-Acquainted with all things.’ (6.103) ‘It is not fitting for a human being that Allah should speak to him except by inspiration or from behind a veil.’ (42.51) ‘Aisha further said, “And whoever tells you that the Prophet knows what is going to happen tomorrow, is a liar.”

Here Aisha (ra) herself applied the rule of Diraayah, that is, she rejected an idea because it was contradicting the Qurán.

  9. Well the reality is that no Sahih Hadith of the prophet (PBUH) contradicts the Quran as the source of both is Allah. It might be that something might appear to you a contradiction, but with proper understanding, it can be clarified that it is not.

Therefore, we should leave the verification of the hadith to the scholars who are qualified enough to make the distinction.

    • When you use the word SAHIH you are actually speaking of the Isnaad alone, not of the text. It is possible that what was transmitted as the words of the Prophet (sws) were not the actual words he said but a paraphrase of that, which has a possibility of contradicting the Qurán.

And there are many examples even from the hadith books where many companions corrected some companions who narrated a saying of the Prophet (sws) incorrectly. It shows that it is possible that a companion can misunderstand the words of the Prophet.

Next I also pointed out the example of Aisha (ra) who used the Quran to nullify the false reports and hence made Quran the Furqan. We should also adopt the same path. So a truly Sahih hadith is one which does not contradict the Quran even if its isnaad is Sahih.

  10. Sunnah complements the Qur’an.

  11. Brother, no doubt initially Allah is talking about quran..But he end his message by clearing the disbelievers that he is the guardian of both the types of revelation…for example, if I will describe you the beauty of my home land, Andaman island in four to five lines and I will end it by saying … “Indeed my India is too beautiful”.. So does it means I am changing my topic ?…Brother Alhumdulilah I am well aware that in Tafsserul Tabari and many other scholars says that here dhikr means quran but these is only their interpretation..There is also many scholars who says here dhikr include quran and sunnah or Islam…

    1) Sheikh Abdur Rahaman Dimashqiah.in his aqeedah course says.. “They are also mistaken to believe that the verse of the Qur’an,
“It is We Who have sent down the Remembrance, and it is on Us to preserve
    it.”
(15:9) Applies exclusively to the Qur’an. In fact, this part of ‘the Remembrance’
comprises any of what Allah revealed to the Prophet, whether Qur’an and or Sunnah,
both are covered by Allah’s promise in this verse”..

    2) Sheikh Bilal Philip on the topic of Usoola hadith says on the section Preservation of Islaam
“The science of narration, collection and criticism of hadeeth was unknown to the world prior to the era of the Prophet (r). In fact, it was due in part to the absence of such a reliable science that the messages of the former prophets became lost or distorted in the generations that followed them. Therefore, it may be said that it is largely due to the science of hadeeth that the final message of Islaam has been preserved in it is original purity for all times. This is alluded to in the Qur’aanic verse:
“Indeed, I have revealed the Reminder, I will, indeed, protect it.”….
    (Soorah al-Hijr, 15: 9)”.
So my dear brother this is not my own opinion, it has been given by different scholars. I hope you are not among those, who think that, I only know the true interpretation of Quran. I will end this topic by saying “Allah knows the best”…
And secondly here you are arguing with the example of Aisha r.t but unfortunately it doesn’t support your own argument because here she is not rejecting the saying of our Prophet Mohammad p.b.u.h .You just making false allegation on our mother. She is just rejecting one of the opinion of her time and Alhamdulillah i agree with her…Jazak Allah.

  12. @Abdul Ahad

No personal comments allowed. You may clarify your point without commenting on any person’s english/knowledge/understanding.

  13. My dear brother there is a no need of arguing with you.I am sorry to say that all of the your above argument is baseless.i am just giving reply for the benefit of the readers.

Where is he Allah saying that he will be guardian of both types of revelation.

Response:Brother i had given the view of two scholars and this view sound more logical. If you don’t agree with the views of scholars, then i am not forcing you..Thats why i end my previous reply by saying “Allah knows the best”.

at least scholarly interpretation, unless you can claim to be a greater scholar than them. And Dimashqiyah and Bilal Philips are nothing compared to Imam Tabari and Imam Qurtubi.

Response :brother no doubt they are great scholars, but i think you don’t agree with all the interpretation of Imam Tabri and Imam Qurtubi.I hope if you are in the field of Dawah you gt my point.

I am not saying only I know. You are playing with words here and thinking you are intelligent

Response;Bro again you are forcing others,to accept that view which you seems to be correct.

I said the context is talking about the Quran, NOT THE HADITH. You have to prove that it is talking of both Qurán and hadith, since you are making the claim. and you have not provided any evidence. To me this article is a complete waste..

Response:Bro i had given the reply for this argument and secondly where does the word QURAN mention in this ayat.Bro its written in my article.. “The text of the quran will not be protected if its understanding which is sunnah is not protected.” Bro for the logical person and those who had studied the books on usoola hadith this statement is enough..Bro if you don’t like this article, wallah i don’t have any problem because we are doing it for the sake of Allah and we need reward only from Allah. You can read other articles,Insha Allah it will be beneficial.

Read again what I wrote. Your English seems to be poor or you are not having proper knowledge. I did not say that she rejected the words of the Prophet (sws). I said that she rejected the words ATTRIBUTED to the Prophet (sws) because she thought that the Prophet (sws) cannot say anything which will contradict the Qurán.

    Response:
Reaction + emotion….My dear Knowledgeable Sheik, you are true i am not a knowledgeable person..i am just a student, plz do dua for me…brother for rejecting any view, first that particular view should exist. Please give me reference from any authentic hadith in which Prophet Mohammad p.b.u.h says that he had seen Allah with his own eyes and then Aisha r.t reject it on basis of quran.

WHAT? Are you in your senses? Where did I make false allegations on her? and by the way she is my mother as well not only yours. So stop this ranting nonsense.

Response:Bro if you are not making false allegation, then please give reference of an authentic hadith which is attributed to prophet that he had seen Allah with his eyes and where does i say that she is not your mother..

rejecting it BECAUSE IT CONTRADICTED THE QURÁN. And If you agree with her you will also reject anything which contradicts with the Qurán without any ifs and buts.

Response:Bro she is not rejecting the view attributed to prophet ,which is authentic,.She is just confirming his view by quoting quran.

Bro its true that i am not a knowledge person, but its my sincere advice to you, please read some books on usoola hadith and usoola fiqh..if any of my statement hurts you i am sorry for that.Jazak Allah.

  14. Any person who has a clear mind will See that Dr Asif has preented Evidence in his article and in his comments has given the opinions of the Scholars that support these evidences.

  15. Appreciate it for helping out, excellent information.

  16. i am happy to read your article
