Tactical Maneuvering of the Media

For a vast majority of the people living in the west, the media has taken place of real education. In fact, many people think the media is educational, and they are quick to believe everything it tells them because they are convinced that the journalists have integrity. They are told that the media is responsible enterprise. Many people worldwide rely heavily upon the media as their main source of information and knowledge.

The media is a politically run and motivated entity. As such, it should be carefully interpreted only in this mind frame, and it certainly should be not considered as a substitute for a real education. Ben A. Bagdikian has first-hand knowledge about the depth of power possessed by the media. A Pulitzer prize winning journalist and the former dean of graduate school of journalism at the university of California in Berkely,  he states, “Americans like most people get images of the world from their newspapers, magazines, radio, television, books, and movies.” The media has the power to change and manipulate the inner briefs, moral communication, and personal opinions of the public at large. What is especially important for the public to recognise is that the media is no different than any other corporation or business, and as such, it has economic interests at the forefront.

Bagdikian continues, “Authorities have always recognised that to control the public, they must control the public, they must control information. The initial possessor of news and ideas has potential power – the power to dispose or conceal, to announce some parts and not others, to hold back until opportunistic moments, to predetermine the interpretation of what is revealed.”  Therefore people who listen to the media as a viable information resource, gather information slowly and sporadically and do so with the risk of reviewing fragmented, which may not make sense even if what is projected is true. And worse it communicates with a lot of rhetoric that can possibly be false.

The most alarming revolution Bagdikian divulged ownership of the big media companies is now controlling and managed by a small elite group. Where once fifty national and multinational corporations ran the majority media productions by 1983, it had been whittled down to only firms in action in impact of these twenty. Although there are hundreds and thousands of similar less powerful firms in nearly non-existents. For example, although there are 3000 publishers in the United States, only five of them generate the majority of income.

In 1993, there were only seven corporations who managed the majority of national media to the number used to be twenty. In periodical circulation, the yearly income goes to two firms. Whereas it used to go to twenty. And in book publishing, what used to go to eleven now goes to only five.

As for television and the movie makers, their status remains unchanged with three television networks and for movie production studio. Bagadikian also said “The United States has on impressive array mass communication. There are 1700 daily newspapers, 11,000 magazines, 9000 radio and 1000 television stations, 2500 book publishers and 7 movie studios. He explains that if every one of these had different owners then there might be around 2500 individual corporations able to represent a wide variety of media production. But he confirms that this is not the case. Only fifty corporations represent the American Media.

Based on these statistics, this is possible that the western public, if they remain native to the media, could be slowly and rhythmically brain washed. It is known that media has conveniently told partial truths and has the power to manipulate news. It certainly can direct attention away from important issues to what it prefers to project. It also can draw attention away from something perhaps more important only to fill with something trivial. Worse it can omit together whatever is of great importance. An example of the media’s self interest was seen back in 1996 when Fred Fredly had a moral obligation to resign as acting president of CBS news because the network would not allow the report initially Senate hearing about the Vietnam war. Instead, the authorities told friendly that he had and show team should run a fifth daytime returned of the ‘I Love Lucy’ show. They warned him that one delayed episode of the Lucy show would not be approved by shareholders. They were convinced that to delay such a popular show would create a great financial loss. The company’s stockholders would be clearly upset and that was all that had to be said.

This shows media’s mentality and how it makes decisions about what takes priority and what does not.

About Imran Ali

IMRAN ALI, is an up-coming writer and columnist. His studies were interrupted when he, as a child of 14, simply told his father M. Sulemen, a businessman, that he just can't get what his school teacher teaches paying little attention to the weak students of the class. So, on a promise that he'll 'study at home' he never again saw the face of the school, though he carried his studies well to fullfill the promise of his; his experience as a volunteer(a dedicated social worker) provided him with material for his articles and writings. He first gained attention with ''Aurangzed as he was'' and ''New world Order 'Vs' Just world Order'' (September 2011, The Companion, English monthly, and several other magazines), probably his finest articles. Next 10 year he coming with his debut novel, and is fully dedicated on it's research. Taken together, his articles present a broad, naturalistic picture of Indian life. His subjects include History, the Indian peasantry, the bureaucracy, life of a downtrodden Indians and have nots, the emotional problems of the different classes, and, ominously, hallucination, Very new in Style and to Approach, Combining psychoanalysis with human behaviour. His writings well captures the collective psyche of the world as a whole. He's been a district level boxer. Known as a peoples magnet in his vast friends circle, and a booklover who humorously with pride discloses, '' I've read over hundreds of books relating to arts, literature, science, metaphysics, naturopathy and psychlogy. So, the conclusion here is easy to derive, that i, who was raised from childhood in a modern muslim belief have been mostly preferring reading all kinds of books rather than writing!'' His reading since childhood, has been mostly centered around knowing the truths[truth here means of all kinds humans ever categorized, mysteries and human psyche has given me a better understanding of the human soul, mind and spirit in collaboration with my Islamic teachings.] Since he started his reading at the age of 15 reading Stories of literary giants, like Leo tolstoy, George Orwell, and Guy de muppasant and many Indian masters like Sir Mohammed Iqbal(The Poet Of the East), Margret Marcus, Leopold weiss, and Manto. And their collective influence made me search for my own moorings, adapting my father's style of srorytelling. In the beginning, there was nothing magnificent in acquiring all this, from books, as it was nothing more beside his own interest, and his interest to help morally deprived and confused men he used to meet in parties and gatherings. And amazingly, only a few years back, an up an coming, extraordinarily talented writer and one of his closest friends of his, who always loved his ideas gave rise to a writer hiding somewhere inside him. When while sipping the tea he insisted him to collect his ideas in a diary which keep on counselling youngmen of varieties every third day resulting in a great interruption in our appointed informational communication. Suddenly, at the very instinct, the idea occured in his mind of writing down these ideas effectively, concisely and pertaining to the questions of todays' youth who are short of time resolving them. And with him as his inspiration, he picked up the pen, and started unfolding, writing in the name of the architect of this whole universe. Which is none other than ''Allah.''

  1. Media is indeed the most powerful and effective agency for moulding public opinion. But instead of being the voice of the public, it has become a tool of the powerfuls for promoting and protecting their interests. Its true that media agencies are nothing more than being pure business firms, in the disguise of public agency, taking care of their own interests, as well as the interests of their masters.
Instead of enlightning people with truth, media rather keeps them away from the truth.
Its the media that is largely responsible for distorting the image of islam and muslims worldwide.

    • Well, I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment, and I’ve learned quickly these last few days that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.
      Sarah Palin

  2. Assalamu ‘alaikum
Very meaningful article masha’Allah, the need of the hour is to awaken in people, what is the true role of media!
Allah says in the Qur’an,in the interpretation of the meaning:

“O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.[49:6] “

    • The need of the hour is to awaken people about the deception of media, not about its role because its not in the hands of people in general….Or rather u should say, about its ‘deceptive role’ instead of its ‘true role’…because media is never going to play its role truly and honestly.

    • The copycat effects of media violence, similar to those previously attributed to westerns, radio serials and comic books, are easy to exaggerate.
      Hugh Mackay

  3. American media is perhaps the most deceptive and partial one..Americans need to see the world through their own eyes instead of seeing it through their mass media or they will never come to see the real world.

    • The control of the media and popularity.
The controllers of the world strictly dominates media popularity. The famous “star item” of music, movies, and any type of a media broadcast are under scrutiny of the Illuminati. Anybody that is famous and popular sold out to the Illuminati on their rise to fame. Possibly explains the level of drug use; the popular star item clearly understands that they have to “Play Ball”, because the controllers of the world allow a person, group, or entity to become popular. “Playing Ball” can consist of agreement and accord without being “involved”; however, because of their influential music based on mesonic art, images, lyrics, they are deeply involved. There is no question why certain select musicians, actors, and Internet sites gain the spotlight. The databases of the popular Internet social and search sites will provide an indispensable resource during the short “Golden Age” of the NWO and the Antichrist.

    • Tell me, why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognise our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?
      Abdul Kalam

  4. an eye opener article, thank u mr. Imran ali

  5. superb mr.imran u always make speechless !!

    • The electronic media introduced this idea to the larger audience very, very quickly. We spent years and years and years meeting with activists all over Europe to lay the groundwork for a political response, as we did here.
      Jeremy Rifkin

  6. Lies come in many forms. Partial truths, selective facts, out of context quotes and information, partial historical perspective and out right misrepresentation of facts. It is easy to manipulate the public. If you become aware of the methods of deception you are better prepared to sift through the propaganda for the few facts that are actually made available by our broadcast our news media. Learn their tricks, stay on your toes and become a better informed (responsible) citizen.

  7. “The great masses of the people… more easily fall victims to a big lie than a small one”

  8. The Media is ruled by Satan. But yet I wonder if many Christians fully understand that.
    Jimmy Swaggart

  9. The real political life in Russia unfortunately is not in the parliament but on the streets and in the media.
    Garry Kasparov

  10. The news media are, for the most part, the bringers of bad news… and it’s not entirely the media’s fault, bad news gets higher ratings and sells more papers than good news.
    Peter McWilliams

  11. I became alienated from this religious upbringing, and started making music. I wanted to be a big star. All those things I saw in the films and on the media took hold of me, and perhaps I thought this was my god: the goal of making money.
    Cat Stevens

  12. I became very famous, as a teenager, and my name and photo were splashed in all the media. They made me larger than life, so I wanted to live larger than life, and the only way to do that was to be intoxicated.
    Cat Stevens

  13. I suppose that the media and their portrayal of Islam and the almost tribal separations and divisions of the Muslims are the greatest issues confronting Muslims in the United Kingdom.
    Cat Stevens

  14. The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.
    Malcom X

    • Fine quote for Malcolm X!!
The person who lives in a situation which he could be an innocent or guilty according to the media will write this quote. He had been suffering a lot by the mass of media…..

  15. I don’t think there will ever be a permanent truce, but I believe the media needs to be more careful and be willing to count to 10 before rushing on the air or into print.
    Bob Woodward

  16. The media bring our wars home, but only rarely have they been able to do it in complete freedom.
    Bruce Jackson

  17. All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.
    Noam Chomsky

  18. Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media.
    Noam Chomsky

  19. Sorry about that, but…
When we see movies about India, we understand that the life in the movies is just like the real life in your country, we forget that the movies don’t equal the real life…
But I have to thank Allah that I’ve met you all, Dr. Asif, the two Kashifs and you Imran.
I totally change my opinion about India and about Indians….

  20. IT goes without saying, that this post with a twinkling of an eye, catches your imagination and understanding. The entire era comes out-front of your retinas.
This is why i love to read the articles of this ‘The Companion’s’ up an coming Love-some Writer and natural social activist..

  22. The fact that much people are unaware of, is that the word ‘MEDIA’ is taken from the word ‘MEDES’. The Medes were the ‘Black Magicians’ skilful in illusion and magic. That’s what the media has been doing ever since! Deceiving us! We should not believe what the paid off media tells us.

People who actually buy every word that media projects, don’t they have a brain to think for themselves? It astounds me!

This is what Allah tells in the Qur’an:
    The worst of all creatures, including all that walk, creep or crawl on the earth, are those who are not sensible, reasonable and rational (who do not use their intelligence). [8:22}

  23. A very commendable & daring article, I dont follow World Media s much but at least contentions made by the Author are correct to the extant of Pakistani Media(the most bullying Media in the world). TV Channels in an attempt to attract more viewership or to get high ratings hardly hesitate to compromise the Social/Religious norms & even the National Interest. recent tussle between Geo/Jang & Pak Army endorses the point.
No doubt News Industry in particular has become a Corporate Enterprise aiming only at financial gains.
