What about Other Religions?

Whenever a claim of the truthfulness and validity of a religion is made, a common question asked by people, specially Atheists and agnostics is “what about other religions?” they say that the followers of every religion make this claim. How can we know that yours is true and theirs is false. If yours is from God, then how did others originate? Are they completely false? Don’t they have any basis at all?

First of all, from an Islamic point of view, our claim about Submission to God (Arabic: Islam) being the Only True religion is based on evidence. It is not just a claim out of nowhere.

For example the Concept of God as presented in the Quran is completely compatible with the concept that we derive from the scientific evidence for God presented in the science section of this website. To be more specific, we derive from those scientific evidences that the Universe has a transcendent cause, who is Eternal, and outside time and space. That He is One, as we do not multiply Entities without necessity. That this being is a Wise and intelligent Being as he designed the Universe and Life in it. This is the description in the Quran as well.

Furthermore, we have already shown that there is evidence that Quran is the Word of God.

Now that we have established that Islam is the Truth, let us proceed to answer the question. If Submission to God (Arabic: Islam) is the Only True Religion, then what about other religions? How did they originate? Are they completely false?

Although some may be completely false arising from people claiming to be holy men or incarnations of god for material benefits, there are others that in their original form had a Devine origin.

As pointed out under ‘The Revelations and its Evidence’ God sent down many revelations and Prophets, which contained laws relevant to their times.

“For each period Is a Book (revealed) (Quran 13:38)

To every people (was sent) an apostle: when their apostle comes (before them), the matter will be judged between them with justice, and they will not be wronged [Quran 10:47]

However as time passed, people moved away from the teachings of the prophets. They innovated practices in religion and some even changed the scripture.

But the transgressors changed the word from that which had been given them; so We sent on the transgressors a plague from heaven, for that they infringed (Our command) repeatedly. [2:059]

And so new religions came into existence as people moved away from the True Religion.

When humanity reached the stage to receive the Final Law, that will last till eternity, God sent down His final revelation, through His final messenger, and since it was to be the final revelation, God preserved it.

We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption) [Quran 15:9]

However, even though people corrupted the earlier scriptures, God saw to it that the relevant information, of Oneness of God and prophecies of His last messenger remains in the scripture, so that people can arrive at the truth.

Oneness of God in Hindu scriptures

He is one only without a second
(Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1)
(The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan pg. 447 & 448)
(Sacred Books of the East Volume 1, the Upanishads Part I Page 93)

Of Him there are neither parents nor Lord
(Shwetashvatara Upanishad 6:9)
(The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan pg. 745 and in Sacred books of the East volume 15, the Upanishads Part II Page 263)

There is no likeness of Him
(Shwetashvatara Upanishad 4:19)
(The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan pg 736 & 737 and in Sacred books of the East Volume 15, the Upanishads part II, Page no. 253)

His form cannot be seen, no one sees Him with the eye
(Shwetashvatara Upanishad 4:20)
(The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan pg. 737 And in Sacred books of the East Volume 15, the Upanishad part II, Page no. 253)

(Rigveda 8:1:1)
(Rigveda Samhiti Vol. IX, pg. 1 & 2 by Swami Satyaprakash Sarasvati & Satyakam Vidhya Lankar)

(Rigveda 6:45:16)
(Hymns of Rigveda by Ralph T. H. Griffith pg. 648)

(Rigveda 5:81:1)
(Rigveda Samhiti Vol. 6, pg 1802 & 1803 by Swami Satyaprakash Sarasvati & Satyakam Vidhya Lanka)

There is no image of Him, as He is unborn, He deserves our worship
(Yajurveda 32:3)
(The Yajurveda by Devi Chand M.A. pg. 377)

Deep into shade of blinding gloom fall Asambhûti’s worshippers (those who worship natural things)
They sink to darkness deeper yet who on Sambhûti (created things) are intent

(Yajurveda 40:9)
(Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Griffith pg. 538)

Even Hindu scholars like Raja Ram Mohan Roy founder of Brahma Sabha and Mahadev Govind Ranade founder of Prarthana Samaj, etc. have recognized the monotheism and spoken against polytheism, concepts of Incarnation and Idol worship.

Oneness of God in the Bible

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD {Deuteronomy 6:4}

God describes Himself as follows
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”
“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God.”

[The Bible, Exodus 20:3-5]

“And he (God) said, Thou canst see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
[The Bible, Exodus 33:20]

Prophet Mohammad (saw) prophesied in various world religious scriptures

What about Different sects in Islam?
The reason is the same. When people move away from Quran and the way of the prophet and understanding of his companions, and innovate practices in the religion, which were not prescribed by God, they form into different sects. The truth remains in following Quran and sayings of the prophet, as they were understood by his companions.

Another Question

Another counter question sometimes asked is “what if some religion of China or of Ancient Greek turned out to be true and you didn’t know about it?”

To answer this one must realize that if that religion is true and is actually from God, it will not hold people accountable until the message has reached them.  So first the message needs to be presented with evidence to back it up. Only then will its claim become valid.

As God says in the Quran

And never would We punish until We sent a messenger. [17:15]

Thus we conclude that the question of  “What about Other Religions?” does not destroy our claim that Submission to God (Arabic: Islam) is the Only True religion
